It’s National Apprenticeship Week

It’s National Apprenticeship Week, so we thought we’d try and shed some light on what it’s like to be an apprentice at TC Harrison.

We asked Izzy, our Marketing Apprentice, about all things Apprentice. We also caught up with Matt, our Head of Marketing, to get his views on the benefits of the TC Harrison Apprenticeship Scheme.

Is an apprenticeship at TC Harrison right for you? We thought we’d ask our latest Apprentice what life is like for an apprentice at TC Harrison Group and ask her line manager what the apprenticeship scheme means to the Group?

How has apprenticeship training benefitted your organisation?

Matt said: “Without apprenticeships we would have a massive skills shortage in the engineering teams. Growing and developing our teams via apprenticeships is a cost effective solution to adding new engineers in and giving our apprentices a career-based life skill.”

How have apprenticeships helped to train your team?

Izzy said: “This apprenticeship is a good avenue to get me into an industry that is currently very hard to break into. At a time where an abundance of graduates are struggling to land jobs, the apprenticeship is allowing me to get the experience of a full-time job while learning and earning simultaneously – without burdening myself with a lifetime of debt.”

Matt: “Izzy’s right, without an apprenticeship she could have struggled to get into an industry she has a genuine passion for. Her course has opened her eyes to the wider world of all things marketing and given her the appetite to go and dig about in her day-to-day role. In the three months she’s been with us, she’s come on leaps and bounds.”

Have you noticed any changes to your business or staff since investing in apprenticeships?

Matt: “Our apprenticeships offer unique perspectives on a lot of the day-to-day workings of our entire business. A lot of companies can become complacent in their operations, but having apprentices asking questions gives our teams opportunities to rethink how they do things. With regards to Izzy, her eyes light up when we discuss something new, she is literally a sponge for the teams’ collective knowledge, she is so eager to learn and every new piece of work or project is met with delight and excitement. She also makes a fantastic cuppa!”

Izzy: “Before starting my apprenticeship, I lacked direction and motivation in my everyday life, I didn’t know what I’d be doing for the next year of my life never-mind the next day. Whereas now, I work in an environment where I’m challenged on a daily basis, I earn a ‘grown-up’ wage and have a purpose each day.”

What is the career path for an apprentice at TC Harrison?

Today, former apprentices hold a variety of positions right across the Group. From Service Managers, to Regional Accounts and even our Heads of Departments, apprentices have been given the right training and opportunities to progress from the ultimate ‘newbie’ to the people in charge of teams of people right across all of TC Harrison JCB’s departments.

How do I apply?

Typically we take on apprentices to tie in with school leavers finishing their education but we currently have a number of positions available. If you would like to join the industry at an apprenticeship level, see our Apprentice vacancies below.

We’d love to welcome you to the team.
